Has anyone seen the new animated film Rango?  If so, what did you think?

I just saw Rango yesterday and I immediately started thinking about doing a paper on it for the conference in Missoula. The film opens with Rango, voiced by Johnny Depp, meditating on the nature of narrative and identity. He quickly finds himself tossed out into the Mojave Desert and is picked up by a lizard named Beans. Beans is the western woman fighting for her family’s ranch. She gives Rango a ride into Dirt, a town that bares a striking similarity to Tucson.

The central conflict of the movie is water rights. Those who control the water control everyone else.

My analysis of the film may focus on its role as a contemporary desert narrative and its loving tribute to the great westerns. Rango also has a Greek chorus in the form of three owls that tell the story of Rango in ballad form. Timothy Olyphant, Justified’s Raylan, voices the Spirit of the West who makes an appearance at the end of the film. Those who see the film will also see a strong Clint Eastwood tribute. All the major western tropes are present, along with a few Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas references. My analysis of the film is still in its early stages, but I would welcome any thoughts.

At some point in the next week, I’m going to try to get out and see. Sounds like it should be a lot of fun.
